Massage
What is Swedish Massage?
The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.
Swedish massage was developed in the 1700's by a Swedish doctor named Per Henrik Ling.
The most common movements you will encounter within a massage are:
Effleurage; gentle strokes along the line of muscle fibres
Petrissage; deeper pressure across the muscle
Kneading; deep squeezing and pressure action
Frictions; deep circular movements using the thumbs
Tapotement; hacking and cupping
Any movements are an adaptation of these or are based upon many years of knowledge and understanding and the skill of the therapist.
In modern times its use has been expanded to encompass the psychological aspects of treatment as well as the obvious physical benefits. Following a massage of this type the body tends to feel more connected and in tune with the mind. The lymphatic and circulatory systems are cleansed and stimulated and muscular tension eased; all leading to the feeling of a weight being removed from the body.
A number of different forms of massage, including Swedish, may be combined by your therapist during the treatment. Massage is generally performed in a calm environment where soft music and essential oils may be used to create the right atmosphere.
All medical conditions must be disclosed during the consultation before treatment to enable the therapist to treat you with the correct techniques.
